Katerina Teaiwa is a Pacific academic with paternal links to Banaba (Ocean island) in Kiribati and maternal links to Washington D.C. in the United States (Pacific Community, 2017). Katerina Teaiwa gained her Bachelor of Science from Santa Clara University, a Master of Arts in Pacific Island Studies from the University of Hawai’i, and a PhD in Anthropology from Australian National University. She is currently an Associate Professor at Australian National University’s College of Asia and the Pacific (Australian National University, 2020). While Katerina Teaiwa’s area of expertise covers many topics, her main area of research covers the history of the British Phosphate Commissioners mining activity in the early 1900s specifically on her father’s ancestral island of Banaba (Australian National University, 2020).

Website Overview.

This website is divided into four parts, each part will analyse Katerina Teaiwa’s key contributions to the Pacific. In the climate change section, Katerina Teaiwa explores climate change issues and will touch on Australia’s hypocritical attitude towards to the Pacific. In the History section, Katerina analyses the colonial perspective and indigenous voice to highlight the colonial injustice inflicted upon the Banaban people. In the Pacific Art section, Katerina’s artistic contribution to the Pacific is analysed and discussed. The last part will look at Katerina’s research that provides a platform in which other countries can understand and learn from the Pacific region.
